Irresponsible Knife User of the Day: Math Teacher Mental Case Edition

A New Mexico math teacher is on administrative leave after threatening students with a knife during a pop quiz.

I remember one of my math teachers, Mr. Reeder, explaining the proper pronunciation of his home state of Oregon. “I could kill you with a knife, Or-a-gun.” These days, such an utterance would certainly get a student suspended, and possibly even a teacher.

One thing that is certain to get a teacher suspended is threatening students with a knife. That is what Bernalillo Middle School (N.M.) math teacher Benjamin Nagurski (you can’t make that up) is alleged to have done when students were talking during a pop quiz. He claims that he was just using it to remove staples and turned around to the students to stop. His case might be undermined if other witnesses corroborate the complainant’s claim that Nagurski said “”Maybe next time I’ll pull a machete on you”.

from NYDailyNews:

“Math teacher Benjamin Nagurski was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises Friday, according to KRQE News 13.

Nagurski approached the student to tell him to “stop talking” while waving the knife, making the boy feel “scared” and “unsafe,” the criminal complaint read.”

I certainly agree that if Nagurski threatened the students, an assault charge is warranted. However, simply possessing a tool on school property should not be a crime. An inanimate object is no threat to anyone. Mr. Nagurski certainly is.
