This morning in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza, a disturbed man pulled a knife and slashed his own wrists as bystanders watching the ‘Today Show’ looked on in horror. Unlike other suicidal people with knives, the unnamed man was tackled and detained for treatment instead of being cut down in a hail of poorly-aimed NYPD gunfire. Closing on a knife-armed aggressor is extremely dangerous business for police, but perhaps the presence of so many TV cameras and camera phones prevented yet another ‘suicide by cop.’
The man’s injuries are not described as life-threatening. Conspicuously missing from the police and media reportage: any mention of the kind of knife used in his attempt. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not a ghoul, and I truly don’t need to know the make and length of knife he used. But we all know that if this were a gun, every MSM outlet in the country would be reporting the type of gun involved. And its caliber. And its magazine capacity. And whether authorities believed it had been obtained via the (non-existent) ‘Gun Show Loophole.’
As with the tragic kitchen-knife suicide attempt of Paris Jackson, gun tragedies are instantly capitalized upon by those who would deprive us of our right to effective self-defense. Tragedies that don’t involve guns are not thusly exploited; instead they’re described as regrettable mental-health incidents.
This incident happened in Mayor Mikey’s Bloomberg’s own veritable living room, where knives and guns are all ridiculously restricted. Will we see Mikey’s Minions flaunting this suicide attempt as proof that NYC’s knife laws aren’t strict enough? Probably not.
