Canadian Boy Suspended for Breaking Up a Knife Fight

"Hero: Briar MacLean, 13, from Alberta, Canada, stands outside his school where he tackled a knife-wielding pupil - and was punished because such heroic actions are strictly forbidden" (caption and photo courtesy dailymail.co.uk)

“Briar MacLean, 13, stepped in after he spotted an argument was quickly beginning to escalate between two boys at Sir John A. Macdonald school in Alberta, Canada,” dailymail.co.uk reports. “Suddenly one of the boys pulled out a [“flip”] knife and began to threaten the other turning an scuffle into a potentially deadly situation. The heroic teenager charged and tackled the knife-brandishing youngster into a wall sending both attacker and knife falling to the floor.” Ta-da! Uh, no. “According to the Calgary Board of Education, Briar should have left the scene to find a teacher – abandoning the unarmed student.” So the school suspended him for the rest of the school day. Mum’s not happy . . .

“When did we decide as a society to allow our children to grow up without spines? Without a decent sense of the difference between right and wrong?

‘We’re coddling kids and that doesn’t make for strong individuals when they grow up – what are we teaching these children?”

Good point! And here’s another one: who is teaching these children? How many male teachers does young Brian’s school have and where’s his Dad in all this?

You could say that the lack of male authority figures in young boys’ lives may have something to do with the feminization that Mrs. Maclean decries, but I couldn’t possible comment. Neither can the lawsuit shy school system:

A spokeswoman for the Calgary Board of Education said details of the incident could not be discussed due to privacy regulations.

God forbid someone should teach young boys how to disarm an attacker. Just sayin’ . . .

By his quick action, it seems Briar may have saved two lives that day.
If the boy with the knife had used it, and the other boy was injured or
killed, the juvenile perp may have found his life unfolding in ways that
would have led to who-knows-what, kind of end. We can but hope that
the knife-wielding yute and his parents are taking this opportunity to
appreciate the 2nd chance that Briar’s actions have been given them.

Most of my schools were like that. They didn’t want you to fight back, speak your mind, or anything of the sort. If I did go tell a teacher that I was hit or a fight was happening their concern level varied with how well they liked those involved. They would suspend/expel the victim and too often nothing to the attacker.

School life eerily reflect the disarmament movement that’s sweeping the world. Good people should only fight when their “betters” tell them. Else, just be a good victim and show no signs of aggression. Or else.

I know “suspend everyone involved” is a common thing, but this seems like a case where it definitely should not have.

    Good post Robert.

The Commonwealth countries are and have been moving increasingly towards a model that defines self-defense, fighting back, and going to the defense of others as “barbaric” to quote one of their elitist liberal politicians. Common Wealth governments increasing want and demand that their “subjects” do nothing to intervene on the behalf of real victims who are being assaulted and instead call the police. People who are in the midst of being assaulted have been told not to call-out for others to directly help them but to yell to others to call the police. America, as still a predominately Anglo/Western European culture parallels those societies in their values and laws.

The attitude of the schools seems to me very much like a mother telling her children that “if hit by a brother or sister not to fight back and come tell mommy”.

Who are the teachers, principles, and superintendents of these students? Left Wing liberals and feminists. Male teachers and administrators are increasingly being forced out of the Educational field. Schools in America and the Commonwealth cater to girls needs and learning style not boys. Every cultural institution that has had its formerly masculine value system replaced with feminist values and political correctness has dropped in its standards and quality. Consider the past (say 45 years ago to now) quality in America of education, Hollywood/entertainment, religious institutions, health care, government (never great) is now terrible, mass media, etc.

It doesn’t matter who is the symbolic head of an institution (ie Obama) what matters is the value system of the institution, it’s goals, priorities, programs, etc. A government run still mostly by Alpha-powerful men is not a government that cares about men before others. In reality, American governments (local, state, national) consider and treat men and boys like disposable commodities.

Lastly, a divided society like divided (no father at home) families are easier to control and otherwise manipulate. It’s the classic “divide and conquer strategy” of Machiavelli.

Here is a warning from the bible (Isaiah 3:12) describing what happens when the people get off track, particularly the men not taking their proper place. Sound familiar in the context of this story and the comments?

      King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths

      1. Aharon says:

I’m going to look up that quote. I’m not a religious man yet the Jewish and Christian Bibles (old and new testaments) are in my opinion filled with pearls of wisdom. I find that I can often apply their teachings when I take them on a metaphorical (symbolic) and/or literal level.

This story has a bunch more details.

One notable quote, from the mom: “He had a friend stick up for him in that situation and I’m taking the two of them to Disneyland in two weeks. Because if you stick up for my kid, I’m going to treat you right.”

  7. ChuckN says:

Unless parents and community members start pushing back
hard against teachers and administrations that pull this
nonsense and blatant abuse of power, things will not change.

    1. Aharon says:

I think things will only keep getting worse.

      1. ChuckN says:

As long as parents and community members accept
without so much as a whimper, they will.

  8. singleactionguy says:

I think this kid did the right thing. But if you haven’t worked in a school and investigated these types of incidents, you shouldn’t pass judgement. Immediately after the incident the school administrators didn’t know his level of involvement. Student safety is their FIRST priority. Which means drop everything and investigate as fast and as thoroughly as possible and remove all potential threats from the rest of the students (suspend or they sit in the office). If any participants were just practicing self defense, or trying to break up the situation that’s uncovered in the investigation, which it sounds like it was as the boy was only kept in the office for the remainder of the day. He didn’t get any consequences or arrested, but I’m sure the two fighters did/will. The school acted fairly and prudently. In the fog of a fight and then an investigation, it takes a lot of work to figure out the facts and who’s a threat to student safety and who’s not. It’s unacceptable to make a less than informed decision on who’s a threat and then possibly send a threat back to class amongst the rest of the students. I’d say the mom is over-reacting and the critics are Monday morning quarterbacking.

The identity of the boy with the knife (a photo for exemple) isn’t mentioned, I wonder why.
In any case, just another case where white males are asked to be weaklings and not have any guts. Look at the white, male role models on TV: for example: Sheldon Cooper in BBT, could anyone look more effeminate? And when they’re big and tuff, they’re not white somehow, don’t know were all this comes from. It’s ok for boys in ghettos to have attitude and be violent, mainstream medias will pass that as being folklore and culture. And it’s apparently illegal now to say « husband, wife » in the workplace, it’s supposedly anti-gay. Is there no end to this crap? All this looks like a general tendancy to please the sacred lobby groups and ignore the feelings of the majority.

Aint liberalism grand. They had a plan to destroy the Western world, and its going like clockwork.
