As we reported a few months ago, Consumer Reports really liked the Ginsu Chikara kitchen knife set. Their lab-coated wonks rated the $75 Ginsu set just a few points behind the $300 Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Professional “S” kit. But the CR wonks aren’t professional chefs, and Kenji Lopez-Alt is.
Lopez-Alt is the brains behind Serious Eats, and CR asked him for a professional second opinion about their top-rated kitchen knife sets. After some serious chopping, slicing and dicing (but not pricing), Kenji prefers the Zwilling J.A. Henckels for their balance and slightly sharper edge.
But the Ginsus are a pretty close second, and since they’re only a quarter the price of the Henckels, I’ll be ordering a set myself. I’m sure they’ll handily dispatch the decades-old, used-and-abused Wusthofs that currently occupy my knife block, but that’s not really saying much.
