My day job takes me inside the wire at several state prisons, and I’ve seen what happens when there’s a rumble in the exercise yard. Ever since the Tsarnaev Bros tried to blow up Boston, Massachusetts law enforcement seems to have adopted the same “State Penitentiary” reponse to violent crime: lock down all the
prisoners citizens in their cells homes until the guards police sort everything out.
The latest case in point? A broad ‘shelter in place’ order was issued in Salem after a man, later identified as Timothy Wells (above) slashed a student on a campus bus and stabbed the bus driver who tried to intervene.
Boston.com has the details:
Salem State University and a nearby elementary school went into lockdown today for two hours after a man suspected of stabbing a shuttle bus driver and a student earlier in the day was believed to have returned to campus.
The search of the North Shore university by Salem and university police ended without the arrest of the suspect, identified by Salem police as Timothy Wells. The school has canceled the remainder of classes today and tonight, but officials said they would resume Thursday.
The “shelter in place” order was issued by the Salem State Police Department at 12:35 p.m. in response to the possibility the suspect had made his way back to the campus. It was extended to include the adjacent Horace Mann Laboratory School, a Salem public school. The order was lifted shortly after 2:30 p.m.
“The suspect from the stabbing that occurred earlier today might have returned to campus,’’ the school said in its 12:35 p.m. posting. “The entire Salem State university campus is to shelter in place at this time. Doors should be closed and locked; refrain going near windows until further notice.’’
According to the school, the attacks happened at 11:10 a.m. when an “unknown assailant assaulted two people with a knife on one of the university shuttle buses in the Central Campus parking lot. ‘’
One of the victims was a female student who suffered a laceration to her arm. According to the school, when the shuttle driver tried to help the wounded student, the driver was attacked. The driver received “a minor puncture wound to the chest.’’
The student was treated at the scene and the driver was taken to an area hospital. Neither of the victims’ injuries was considered life-threatening, said university spokeswoman Karen Cady.
This ‘Lockdown Nation’ trend scares the shit out of me, because it’s much more harmful than the violence it tries to prevent. It teaches police that they can order anyone to do anything, just because somebody else did something stupid.
It teaches the public that in order to be safe we must surrender our freedom, and that we can only exercise our Constitutional and God-given liberties at the pleasure of the police and the prison-industrial complex.
It doesn’t make me feel any better that the suspected perp was arrested later in the day by police in neighboring New York State. The damage to Lockdown Nation has already been done.
