China Executes Kunming railway slashers. Another knife-attack in Guangzhou.

Police control the site after a knife attack outside the Guangzhou Railway Station

Paramilitary Police stand guard following a knife attack at the Guangzhou rail station in China.

Organized knife attacks are a semi-regular occurrence in China. One of the deadliest of such attacks occurred last year at the Kungming railway station which left more than 20 dead and over 140 injured. The 3 Uighur separatists who carried out the attack have reportedly been executed. Just as no government will ever run out of knives, rocks, bats, etc to ban in the name of “public safety”, it appears that the supply of knife-wielding suicide attackers is likewise limitless. There was another attack in the last couple of weeks, this time at the Guangzhou railway station. This one left 9 commuters wounded and one suspect dead and the other in custody.

I am not sure which side I am rooting for in these attacks. On one hand, anything that damages China is not all bad. They are not simply a strategic competitor to the United States, but are actively seeking a world where they supplant the Western powers as the dominant player on the world stage. As much as I have issues with the behavior of my own government on issues both foreign and domestic, I am quite sure that I do not want to live under boot of a Chinese hegemon.

On the other hand, the Uighur separatists are also an Islamist group. To what extent they are a part of the global jihad movement is unclear. To a significant degree they are a distinct ethnic group who happen to be Muslim and from what I have read, their movement predates the globalization of the Islamist movement.

Because of the Islamist angle and because their attacks are largely against innocent civilians and not State targets, I cannot root for the Uighurs either. However, these attacks remain illustrative of the larger issue that even totalitarian societies cannot eliminate knife crime, and that the prohibition model of crime control is a complete farce. The solution lies with a populace whose God-given right to self defense is honored and enshrined, and who are free to chose whatever tool they feel necessary to defend themselves and that right.

  1. so much perfect in that last paragraph.
are depots knife free zones? can we expect an uptick in razor belt sales? perhaps the emperor will ban briefcase piercing hudiedao.
weird how it seems ballsy and cowardly to launch an attack like that.
