What started as an argument among 4 people at a McDonalds in Harlem ended with a street brawl leaving a homeless man dead and a woman critically injured Friday morning. The quartet began arguing over an inexpensive umbrella, and the situation quickly escalated after they were removed from the building.
“There was blood everywhere,” said an eyewitness to the carnage that occurred outside the McDonald’s at 125th St. and Lexington Ave. around 8:10 a.m. Minutes earlier, the warring twosomes were jawing about the ownership of the flimsy-looking umbrella.
A horrifying video obtained by the Daily News captured a man in army fatigues, a huge curved knife in his right hand, plunging the blade three times into the back of an unsuspecting woman.
The victim was wrestling with her attacker’s girlfriend, each one clutching and twisting one end of the umbrella in a bizarre tug of war, when she was stabbed from behind on the busy street.”
Of course the knife used by the killer was not NYC approved, though it looked to be a fixed blade and not a “gravity knife”. The deceased victim was reportedly armed with a boxcutter. It would be slightly ironic if after this sorts itself out he was justified in killing the victim (if it is established the deceased attacked him first), yet would face charges for the stabbing of the woman. I can see no justification whatsoever for that act in the brief video available.
Of course there are many examples of people being killed with umbrellas as well, no knife required.
Perhaps the most famous case was the KGB assassination of Bulgarian exile Georgi Markov in London in 1978. In that instance, the umbrella was used to deliver a poisoned pellet to Markov’s calf. A similar incident occurred to an unnamed German man in 2011 who died a year later.
There have been lower profile incidents where an umbrella is used as a tool for murder. A man in China (where guns are banned, and knife crime is a big deal) murdered his lover by stabbing her with an umbrella in 2007. In Australia, where most privately held firearms were confiscated and destroyed, a 14-year old boy pierced the skull of a 15-year old after an argument, driving the tip into the boy’s brain and killing him.
And in the hoplophobic paradise that is the Big Apple, a cab driver died after being stabbed through the eye with an umbrella in 2013. There are more examples out there, but you get the “point”.
We as a society should really examine how these deadly implements are legal to carry in public.
