We have been quick to point out when a knife or other tool is misused by a jihadi, so it is only fair and consistent to not let it pass when the actor was not a practitioner of the “Religion of Peace™”
This time it was an ultra-orthodox Jew who took umbrage at people expressing their freedom to live a life that Yishai Schlissel disagreed with. So for the second time in his life (he had just been released from prison for a similar attack in 2005 on the same event) he decided that his religion trumps the rights of others and now a 16-year old girl is dead and 5 others wounded.
From the UK Mirror:
Dramatic images showed the suspect reaching inside his coat and raising a knife above his head.
He then began stabbing marchers while screaming, before being tackled by a police officer.
Police have come under criticism for not keeping him under surveillance, as he had been released from prison only weeks earlier after being jailed for stabbing three at the same event in 2005.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his condolences to the dead girl’s family and said: “We won’t permit the terrible murderer to challenge the basic values on which Israeli society is built.”
“We reject with disgust any attempt to impose hatred and violence among us and will bring the murderer to justice.
“Shira was murdered because she bravely supported the principle that everyone has the right to live their lives respectfully and with security.”
Of course it is worth noting that the demographic group that is most often responsible for religiously motivated violence worldwide does not require a knife to illustrate their intolerance of “the gays”. Gravity is simply enough.
Or sometimes it isn’t. Apparently you sometimes need rocks to finish your barbarity. Any tool in a pinch, right?
It is hard to come up with a situation where the Westboro Baptist “Church” is a voice of moderation on the issue of homosexuality. Detestable though they might be, their tool of choice is words, even if those words are hateful or hurtful. This is acceptable within a free society and should be protected.
Stabbing, stoning, or heaving someone off a building are most certainly not.
