Homemade flechette razor-blade shotgun shells. Why not?

With all of the other irons I have in the fire, ammunition reloading is not a hobby I have had the time to take up. That is probably a good thing, as it would only be a matter of time before I would be unable to help myself from trying something like this. The results are mixed, but it was still cool to see.

I love watching videos like these. But I question the mindset behind the people making them. Why even bother bringing up traditional loads in this video where two guys tape xacto knives together and fire them out of a shotgun? Those traditional loads are mass produced by companies that have much larger budgets for testing, by skilled hands producing thousands of shells, with physics and all other considerations done by educated professionals with degrees and experience in these fields. There’s a big difference between the time, effort, and money that goes into one shell made by a company like RST/Federal/Olympia/Remington than what two guys with a youtube channel can funnel into one shell.

You’re forgetting the fun of experimentation.

It’s been a long day. Someone please explain the Far Side! I love his works and it’s driving me nuts I can’t figure this one out.

    1. Famous mountaineer George Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. He replied, “Because it’s there”. (he would perish in his attempt)

The Far Side corollary posits that you would descend a canyon because it is not there.

I can see why people might have interest in these sorts of things (its fun, subversive, and there is novelty value), but if the goal is to cause injury to a target, I think ordinary buckshot is going to be far more effective, with better and more consistent patterning, better range, and more damage.

For what its worth true flechette rounds use fin-stabilised darts so that they travel aerodynamically, in a more-or-less straight trajectory, and point-first.

  4. This is a fun video its like Mythbusters for rednecks lol. Yes you are right mass producers of load may have more money for research and stuff but nothing beats finding out for yourself by experimenting.

This is like the one The Walking Dead guys uses to kill zombies.
