Only a couple of hours before I sat down last night to write my editorial on Police deadly-force against knives, another soon to be high-profile shooting took place in Washington, D.C.

From WashingtonPost.com:

Exactly what prompted the confrontation, which occurred about 6 p.m., remained unclear.

“We don’t really know what’s behind this,” Lanier said. No rigid rules determine how officers are to respond in such circumstances, she said.

“There is no policy that dictates every individual officer’s perception and every individual officer’s actions,” she said. “It is something we train officers to handle based on what the situation is.”

A 15-second video posted on the web shows an officer, arms extended, pointing a pistol at a woman in a pink baseball style hat. She appears to be about eight to 10 feet away, advancing sporadically and unsteadily toward him. He takes a step or two backward. Urgent cries are heard, apparently from bystanders. “Put the knife down,” one person shouts. “Put it down.”

A man in a T-shirt stands between the two, a little to the side, waving his arms downward, apparently calling for her to drop what she carried. In the video, the woman’s hands are not readily visible. Then a single pop is heard, accompanied by screams. The image swirls around, and the video ends.”

There is a longer, 1:00 video with no sound at the Washington Post article that I can’t embed. It provides a bit more context, at least as to the surroundings.

I don’t have a particular issue with the shooting, the woman had plenty of warning to drop the knife. Bystanders are clearly pleading with her. From what I understand from DC Reporter Emily Miller’s Twitter Feed, DC Police do not carry tasers and police in the district in which this occurred are not yet equipped with body cameras.  Thankfully there are the two bystander-shot videos because there are conflicting eyewitness reports to media.

“In interviews, two witnesses said that when police encountered the woman, she had a knife, which they described as relatively small.

One witness, Gerald McBrayer, said she held “a little steak knife” and received no warning. Another witness, Nathan Strickland, said the woman had a steak knife with what he described as a “skinny,” 6-to-8-inch blade.”

At the time of this writing, the woman is in stable condition with a single gunshot wound.

Free Advice of the Day: If a cop is pointing a gun at you and saying “drop the knife!”, drop the knife.

  1. Illegal drugs, booze, mental illness and quite possibly morbid stupidity, may play roles in the knife wielder’s bizarre, robot-like assault on the police officer. Still, there will be many critics who will claim that the policeman should have found another method (i.e., mental telepathy, kung fu, positive thinking, sprinkling fairy dust, etc.) to stop the deadly attack.
