I have been putting this post off. The knife intifada is the latest iteration of a centuries-old clash of civilizations, and watching the genocide of ancient communities of Christians and Jews across the world makes me physically ill. Only in the tiny liberal Democracy of Israel is a stand being made to stem the tide which is threatening the region and beyond.
The latest victim of a Palestinian attack is 76 year-old Richard Lakin, an American who moved to Israel in 1984.
“An American educator who marched for civil rights in the 1960s and advocated coexistence between Muslims and Jews when he moved to Israel died Tuesday after succumbing to wounds sustained in a Palestinian attack on a bus in Jerusalem two weeks ago…”
…Richard Lakin, 76, died of wounds sustained on Oct. 13 when two Palestinian men boarded a bus in Jerusalem and began shooting and stabbing passengers. It was one of the bloodiest attacks in recent violence in which Palestinian attackers killed 11 Israelis. In that time, 55 Palestinians have been killed, including 35 identified by Israel as attackers and the rest in clashes with security forces.”
The situation shows no sign of abetting. It is a cancer that is already metastasizing in the next generation of Palestinians, like the girl in the video above. This anti-Semitic hatred cannot be reasoned with. Unfortunately the world lambastes Israel for every “violation” of human rights, when their adversary is so pathologically warped as to abuse their children in such a reprehensible way.
A Palestinian family has named their baby “Knife of Jerusalem” in solidarity with the young Palestinians who stabbed Israeli soldiers and civilians in recent weeks.
Mohammed Abu Shebika, a Palestinian refugee in Gaza, said giving the name to his newborn son was “the least I could do” to show support for the uprising in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.
“Allah has given me a new baby, and I’ve named him ‘Knife of Jerusalem’ after the Intifada of the Knives, because we are now witnessing a new kind of revolution,” he said.”
A woman whose son was killed after stabbing was interviewed for a news program:
“Allah be praised, Muhammed was martyred for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” she said, smiling. “Allah willing all my children will follow in Muhammed’s footsteps.”
“We knew (what he had in mind),” she continued proudly. “I did not cry, and I am angry that he did not take me with him.”
“We regret nothing, we are proud of him,” she added, before offering her interviewer a plate of sweets “to celebrate Muhammed’s martyrdom.”
I suppose the primary reason I have been putting this off is because I am at a complete loss for words. One can argue with individual policies of the Israeli Government. However, to equate, much less condemn the actions of Israel in this conflict is pathologically dishonest.
There is nothing that I can say that can make sense of this, much less begin to articulate a solution.
