In an act of unspeakable horror, a pregnant woman was fatally stabbed Friday and her unborn child cut from her womb. Police arrested Ashleigh Wade at the scene of the crime, claiming the baby was hers.
Ms. Wade, 22, was charged on Saturday with murder, criminal possession of a weapon and committing an “abortional act” that caused a woman’s death in connection with the stabbing of Angelikque Sutton, the police said. Ms. Sutton, 22, who was nearly nine months pregnant, was strangled and stabbed several times in the neck and torso inside Ms. Wade’s apartment in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.
Investigators believe Ms. Wade cut a baby girl from her womb. The girl was later taken to Montefiore Medical Center in good condition. After emergency workers arrived at Ms. Wade’s apartment on Friday, she screamed that the baby that had just been cut from Ms. Sutton’s womb was hers, the police said.
What makes this story particularly creepy is that Wade had been spinning a tale for months on social media and with acquaintances detailing her impending baby and complications with her pregnancy.
“A city councilman, Andy King, said that investigators were considering the case to be a possible “baby snatching,” though the police offered no motive. The mystery only deepened with the revelation that Ms. Wade had left an elaborate trail of suggestions online and in conversations with her landlord that she was expecting a child.
The landlord, Angela Parris, said Ms. Wade had told her she was to give birth on Nov. 16 and that she had gone to the hospital a few weeks ago to be treated for complications related to her pregnancy. Specifically, Ms. Parris said Ms. Wade told her she had placenta previa, a condition in which a placenta partially or fully covers the opening in the mother’s cervix.
Several online baby registries listed under Ms. Wade’s name also indicated she was expecting to give birth to a baby girl on Nov. 16. A Babies “R” Us registry listed 47 items, including a changing pad cover, diaper bag, bibs and bottles.
A man who identified himself on his Facebook page as being romantically involved with Ms. Wade, Angel Praylow, posted online addresses linked to Ms. Wade’s baby registries in September, saying they were “for my daughter.” He also posted an ultrasound image on his Facebook page, along with a comment that he could not “wait to meet her.”
In a picture of the couple posted on Facebook in July, Ms. Wade referred to herself as Mr. Praylow’s “pregnant GF.” And Mr. Praylow wrote of the baby on Facebook on Nov. 16, “Today her due day but she not ready to come out yet.”
Yikes. Either Wade is legitimately nuts, or she is evil incarnate to carry out such a vile act with such elaborate premeditation.
