Video: Wheelchair-bound man trains for DKU; helps others.

Cole Rogers suffers from arthrogyposis, a neurological disorder which leaves him wheelchair-bound and his joints fused in a fixed position. He is far from defenseless however, he has been training several forms of Martial Arts since 2008. In the above video, Cole practices DKU with MMA fighter Ryan Hoover.

Cole is also the founder of Fightability.org, an organization which seeks to increase access to specialized defensive training tailored to their specific needs and challenges.

“Do we still live in a world where the weak must simply accept that at any time they could be victimized by the strong? Is it up to a few of us to protect the majority, or does each person have a duty to ensure their own safety? We at FIGHTABILITY believe that every human being has not only a right to self defense, but the duty actively promote peace in our society. We are a company dedicated to making self defense training easily available to people that otherwise may have been told that they must place their safest in the hands of others…”

Our goal is to create a community of instructors and students, both abled and differently abled, that can collaboratively work together on the teaching and learning of modified self defense. We are currently involved in creating an all inclusive program of that will allow someone in any condition to pursue realistic and effective self defense goals through easily understandable concepts that apply to a wide variety of situations.

FIGHTABILITY training is designed to not only give one the tools to survive a violent situation, but more importantly give one tools that they can use in their everyday lives, such as strength, confidence, vitality, and a warriors mindset.

Kudos to Cole for not only facing his condition with a positive attitude but seeking to help others. He sounds like quite a young man. From the looks of the video, a young man who is not to be trifled with.

Cole’s Bio on Fightability.org reads as follows:

Cole Rogers is a young martial artist that was born with severely limited mobility. Through his pursuit of the martial arts he has transformed not only his body but also his mind. As a younger person he was often intrigued by martial arts but did not start training formally until 2008 when he was approached by an instructor. Since then he has trained with instructors in many styles such as Kali/Escrima, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kempo, and Krav Maga. While many world class instructors were more than happy to accept him into their schools, he was often times turned away due to his disability. Not wanting others to have to endure the same struggle, he created FIGHTABILITY, the first organization specializing in realistic self defense training for the differently abled.
