Sergey Rogovets is another maker from the Empire Outfitter stable, though his work is also available from larger outlets such as BladeHQ and KnifeCenter. He has a background in jewelry and watch making, and his knives show an attention to detail fitting of those crafts. His work is priced for the collector market, but are much more than objets d’art.
We want to thank Sergey for participating in our “5 from the Grinder” series. If you are a knifemaker (or know one) who would like to showcase your work with your own “5ftG” feature, please drop us an email at email@example.com.
My name Sergey Rogovets ,
First , I am knife user and collector , each time I took new knife I found something that I would improve or modify. Over time and lots of knives I finally realized “perfect knife” doesn’t exist, so I had to make it .
This is how it started .
In today’s world then everything done on computers and quantity more important than quality, I do exactly opposite. All my knives completely hand crafted by me, no CAD , no CNC , no waterjets . Everything done in my shop from Design and parts manufacturing to heat treatment and assembly .
What knifemaker(s) or designer(s) have had the biggest influence on you? Do you have any mentors?
I dont have single maker what made biggest influence on me, it was lots of knives I had over time .One drop from each knife .
What is your favorite knife pattern or style from history?
Persian , Harpoon, and Wharncliffe , titanium frame locks my favorite at this time. I don’t like any shovel type knife
What is the next big thing in knife making? / What direction do you see the industry going?
…..No idea ,I am planning to stay my course, make top quality knives what will last .
Is there a knife from your lineup that you feel best exhibits who you are as a knifemaker/designer in terms of design elements, aesthetic or techniques used?
All my knives built on same principals : strong, simple ,reliable .I like titanium frame locks and if I find ways to improve it I will integrate it in ALL my knives. There is NO single knife what I can name .
What is your EDC and why?
80% my own knives, then I get tired some knives from my collection .Why ? Because I trust my knives more .
