Today we bring you a young knifemaker who has a name befitting the vocation. Wayne Sharp connected with me through out Facebook page, and as we are always looking to feature up and coming makers we asked him to submit a “5 from the Grinder” post.
We are glad that he did, and I am happy to bring you Wayne Sharp as our latest installment of 5ftG.
First, in a few sentences, please introduce yourself and let us know what led you to making/designing knives.
My name is Wayne Sharp of Waysharp Blades. Some people say I was born to do this others say fate…but honestly I just like cutting stuff! For the past 2 years I’ve worked hard to provide extremely affordable custom knives in hopes of getting more people into buying handmade instead of mass produced products.
Question 1: What knifemaker(s) or designer(s) have had the biggest influence on you? Do you have any mentors?
Much respect to Kevin R. Cashen for helping me and many new makers with his work! Micheal Gavac at Gavko knives showed me to support fellow makers and the knife community. Nick Wheeler helped show me anything worth doing is worth doing right.
Question 2: What is your favorite knife pattern or style from history?
Definitely the Smatchet. I love its chopping power and strength when stabbing plus it just looks awesome in hand!
Question 3: What is the next big thing in knifemaking? / What direction do you see the industry going?
Well thin is in but I am seeing 1/4 inch folders so who knows right? I’d really like to see people order more handmade stuff instead buying from large companies.
Question 4: Is there a knife from your lineup that you feel best exhibits who you are as a knifemaker/designer in terms of design elements, aesthetic or techniques used?
I can’t just pick one from my lineup to me a full flat/flat grind best shows who I am as a maker it doesn’t do the best at one specific job but it does very well at all task instead of being the best at only one.
Question 5: What is your EDC and why?
In my pocket I have a brown and black Kershaw Blur in Elmax my best friend got me as a gift. But an Ontario RAT-1 is still my first true love!
