A reader just sent me this via Twitter. A 26 year old man has surrendered to police after using a knife to kill at least 19 people at a Japanese residential center for people with disabilities.
A knifeman has killed at least 19 people and injured 45 in Japan, according to local reports.
It is believed the attacker went into a centre for disabled people in Sagamihara, outside of Tokyo, brandishing a knife.
Police were called to the scene at around 2.30am local time after residents saw a man armed with a knife in the grounds of the Tsukui Yamayuri Garden.
Local media have reported that 19 people have died and 45 were injured – of which four are in a serious condition.
Armed police encircled the centre which offers support to people with disabilities, including proving meals and creative and rehabilitation activities.
and arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of murder
Officers arrested a man, 26, on suspicion of murder when he came into a police station and said: ‘I did it’.
He has been reported as being a former member of staff at the centre. The city is home to a large US Army depot called the Sagami Army Depot.
The attack comes after Mayu Tomita, a Japanese pop star, was left in a coma in May when a fan stabber her dozens of times after she allegedly turned down a gift he had sent her.
More details as they become available.
