Video: Walter Sorrells explains everything you ever wanted to know about hardness

Hardness is an esoteric topic that is too far into the weeds for the average end-user. Most folks do not need to know much beyond hard is good up to the point where it becomes difficult to sharpen and brittle. Softer is easier to sharpen but won’t hold its edge. Many people live their lives never even knowing that much.

Enter Walter Sorrells, master knifemaker and explainer of all things knifemaking related.

Not everyone is interested in Rockwell Scale, the metallurgical underpinnings of the topic of hardness, or even the nature of “what is hardness?” in the first place. But if it is something that you find interesting, this is a great video to geek-out on. Or if you don’t have the 21 minutes to watch the whole thing, check out this great text and graphic based primer on the subject.

  1. Actually he doesn’t go into the weeds at all. He starts to, then pulls back, saying, “Walter, how do I use what you are saying?” Then he repeats himself, then pulls back again, saying “Walter, give me something I can use!” Etc.
