Knife Rights’ donated “Freedom’s Steel” knife raises $120,000 for NRA-ILA

For the 6th year running, Knife Rights has donated a one-of-a-kind knife to the auction at the NRA-ILA (Institute for Legislative Action) dinner. This year’s knife was called the “Victory’s Edge Bowie™” and was crafted by ABS Master Smith J.R. Cook, and engraved by Barry Lee Hands – a celebrated master in that craft. The previous 5 years’ knives raised just north of $120,000 combined. This year’s knife raised $120,000 itself. Bravo!

I will post the Knife Rights press release below the jump, but you are going to want to click to the full post on KnifeRights’ website. It has complete bios of Masters Cook and Hands, more background on the knife and the Knife Rights “Freedom’s Steel™” program. There are many great photographs by Jim Cooper (Instagram @sharpbycoop) like this one here:

This is a video of the knife being auctioned. It starts kind of slow, but about a minute in the dam breaks and the room positively comes alive.

Knife Rights’ Freedom’s Steel™ VI – Victory’s Edge™ Bowie Raises $120,000 for NRA!
“Not Too Bad For a Slightly Used Knife”

May 3, 2017 – Gilbert, Arizona: Knife Rights’ Freedom’s Steel™ VI – Victory’s Edge™ Bowie raised $120,000 for NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action at the NRA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia last week. The stunning Transition Damascus Bowie forged by Master Smith J.R. Cook with dazzling 25K Gold overlays, inlays and engraving by Firearms Engravers Guild of America President Barry Lee Hands saw spirited bidding at the annual NRA-ILA Dinner and Auction concluding with a standing ovation for the winning bidder at $120,000!.

Named in honor of President Trump’s election victory that secured the future of the Second Amendment, Knife Rights Founder and Chairman Doug Ritter noted he was, “thrilled to affirm our commitment to our shared goal of preserving the Second Amendment for future generations in such a spectacular fashion.” Referencing the dramatic rope-cutting demonstration on stage just prior to the bidding’s start, he quipped, in the understatement of the evening, “not too bad for a slightly used knife.”

Mark Zalesky, editor of Knife Magazine, noted that, “as far as I can recall, this is an all time record price for a handmade knife at a public auction. Congratulations to Knife Rights, J.R. Cook and Barry Lee Hands.” You can read all about Victory’s Edge™ Bowie at: www.KnifeRights.org/FreedomsSteel

  1. Hehe,… $120,000.00 is a nice chunk-o-change paid for a single knife! I’d venture a guess the rarity of the “25K gold” overlays was the deciding factor in reaching that price for a single knife, since 24K gold is Internationally recognized as being pure gold and as high as it usually goes 🙂 Not many years ago .9999 Fine was as high a purity as was generally found, but Canada (and maybe a few others Countries?) has produced some collectors coins in .99999 purity over several years now.

For what it’s worth, that “extra” .00009 purity level at current gold pricing of $1230.00 per troy ounce equates out to just $.11 (eleven CENTS!) in added intrinsic value,…. yet commands an additional $10.00 or so in added premium. Not a great deal by any reasonable investment measure. 🙁

    YMMV……
