TOPS Wind Runner

New from TOPS Knives: The Wind Runner and Wind Runner XL

There has been considerable buzz about several of TOPS Knives’ releases this year. The El Chete debuted last May and received a solid review from our friend Tim Carpenter. The TOPS Tanimboca Puuko is a nice fusion of TOPS’ styling and a traditional pattern with a great depth of history. I got to see both in the middle of their production runs when I visited TOPS’ Idaho manufacturing facility this past June.

Joining these is a pair of new hunting knives – the Wind Runners. Recognizing that there is not “One Knife to Rule Them All”, the Wind Runners are best paired together (literally – there is an available “piggy-back” Kydex sheath) with the small/standard Wind Runner filling the role of a Bird & Trout-style knife, and the XL model being better adapted to larger game and campcraft.

From TOPS Knives:

The perfect pair for hunters:

Most hunters in TOPS’ neck of the woods don’t hunt only one type of animal. They hunt several, and fish, and camp, and just generally like spending time outdoors. The Wind Runners were designed with them in mind. The regular Wind Runner is just right for fish, fowl, and small game. The XL is great for larger animals and general use around the campsite. The recurved blades slice easily with tips that are subdued to avoid puncturing hides and organs while processing game. Comfortable Micarta handles provide a solid purchase that makes using the knives as fun as they are functional.

The Wind Runner and Wind Runner XL can be purchased separately or as a combo with a piggyback sheath from the  TOPS Knives Store.

Long Description

XL Version: The Wind Runner XL Snake River Edition is a re-worked version of a classic TOPS hunting knife. This new version sports our famous Black River Wash with green canvas Micarta handles to provide grip even when they’re wet. This is the larger of the two Wind Runners and it is a great all-around hunting knife. Every detail about the blade was included to make processing animals easy. The subdued tip allows the user to skin without worrying about puncturing a hide. The recurve and sweeping belly are ideal slashing tasks for gutting, skinning, and caping. The high grind on the thick stock make it strong, but with a very sharp edge. The handle is comfortable in standard hunting grips and the green canvas Micarta will help the user keep that grip even when it’s wet (a must when processing game). The Kydex sheath provides excellent retention and a low-profile carry option.

Small Version: The Wind Runner Snake River Edition is a re-worked version of a classic TOPS hunting knife. This new version sports our famous Black River Wash with green canvas Micarta handles to provide grip even when they’re wet. This is the smaller of the two Wind Runners and when purchased alone comes set up for neck carry. The recurved blade is excellent for slashing cuts, and the sweeping belly up to the subdued tip all make skinning small game a breeze. This small size is suited to handle processing fish, fowl, and smaller game animals in a lightweight package that is comfortable to use.

Combo: Why pick one or the other when you can get both Snake River Edition Wind Runners in a combo? These hunting knives are an excellent pair for anyone who enjoys hunting, fishing, or camping. They excel at tasks for processing fish, fowl, and game, and can also be quite handy around the campsite. The combo includes the Wind Runner and Wind Runner XL with their Kydex sheaths piggybacked together.

Our famous Black River Wash paired with green canvas Micarta handles make these knives as gorgeous as they are useful. You’ll be glad you got them both.

    more french curves than bardot.
    who’s gonna sharpen that?

    1. Wouldn’t be hard with the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Just use the triangle/pointy side.
