I do not have a lot of experience with push knives. There are better styles of defensive knives if you are going to commit to training with them. However, for the untrained, push-daggers are an attractive option. As John “Shrek” McPhee says, “You just make a fist and throw punches like your life depends on it”.
Shrek sells a puncher made entirely of G10. For those looking to take things up to an even higher notch, TOPS Knives has just released a beast of a push knife – The I Stick.
Top Knives Press Release:
TOPS I STICK – A Push Knife with Power
The I Stick was designed to do some serious damage. It is perhaps the thickest push knife on the market and will add weight to your punches when the situation calls for it. At 3/8” thick and just over 12 ounces, you won’t forget you’re carrying it, but for those looking for a stout push knife, this is it. The sheath facilitates low profile, close to the body carry to keep it out of sight whether you’re carrying appendix, hip, 4 o’clock, etc. It’s also completely ambidextrous. The handle has thick, rounded scales for comfort and to fill the hand when clenched in a fist, and the double edge blade does the job when stabbing or slashing.

As soon as you pick up the I Stick, you know you’re holding a serious blade. This thing started as a chunk of 3/8” 1075 steel and was morphed into what is probably the thickest push dagger on the market. The heft of the knife is on purpose as it was meant to add weight and power to a punch when you need it to stay alive. Basically, the I Stick was designed to do damage.
The grip is comfortable with the stem either between the index and middle fingers or between the middle and ring fingers. The handles are thick and round to fill a clenched fist and stay put. The Kydex sheath sits close to the body for easy concealment and to allow for a full grip on the knife right from the draw.
The beauty of push knives is how simple they are to wield for stabbing and slashing in multiple directions. Just grab it and go.
