I didn’t have the chance to get to the story of the spree stabbing at a Boise, ID apartment complex since I was in the process of pulling together a week’s worth of posts related to the Laguiole folding knife. For those who might have missed the news, a man went on a rampage at a birthday party, wounding 9, one of whom has since passed from her injuries.
Authorities say a man invaded the birthday celebration and attacked nine people with a knife.
Timmy Kinner is accused of stabbing a group of children and the adults who tried to protect them at the party at an apartment complex that is home to many refugee families.
Word of the child’s death came at Kinner’s first court appearance, where Ada County Magistrate Judge Russell Comstock told him that he was charged with first-degree murder and other felonies in connection with the attack.
Comstock told Kinner he was “an extreme danger to the community” and ordered him held without bond.
Kinner is American, and the victims are members of refugee families from Syria, Iraq and Ethiopia. Boise Police Chief William Bones said the evidence doesn’t suggest the attack was a hate crime.
The suspect had recently stayed at the apartment complex but was asked to leave Friday over bad behavior, Bones said.
Three of the stabbing victims were adults, the others children: the 3-year-old girl who died, two 4-year-olds, a 6-year-old, an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old.
If convicted, Kinner could be eligible for execution under Idaho law.
The other reason that I didn’t jump on this story was that it didn’t take long for me to realize that the early reporting was all over the place. When I first heard “stabbing at apartment complex housing immigrants” I thought maybe it was an asylum seeker who was the perp, an assumption that has been warranted many times over, especially in Europe.
However, it soon became clear that it was the immigrants who were the victims, and that is when the story started making even less sense. Media began to make it sound like it was some MAGA hat wearing Idaho redneck who attacked a birthday party full of young refugees. I remember thinking to myself, ho odd it would be for someone matching that description in Idaho to not have used a gun. Well, as happened in the newspaper room shooting last week, the media’s narrative just doesn’t hold up.
from PJ Media:
The seeming direction that the media narrative took was that this was a hate crime by someone from out of state, directed at Boise’s refugee community and fueled by anti-immigration rhetoric.
Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case with arrested suspect Timmy Earl Kinner:
A quick internet search shows a series of arrests and charges for Kinner in a number of states, including apparently being shot by a homeowner during a burglary, but nothing to indicate any anti-immigrant animus or bias, just a career criminal.
That notwithstanding, the message that the horrific stabbings last night were fueled by anti-refugee sentiments and by President Trump quickly took hold on social media…
…Given the media’s less-than-stellar response to Thursday’s horrific mass shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper on and all kinds of hints that President Trump’s criticism of the media was to blame (turns out the killer had a long-standing grudge against the newspaper), you might think that the establishment media would be inclined to tone down the rhetoric against Trump and his supporters and wait until all the facts come out.
That doesn’t seem to be the case. In last night’s stabbing spree, there is no indication that the refugee status of some of the victims played any role at all. But that was exactly the element to the story that the media led with earlier today.
The Blogfather wrote recently that the media has historically had 3 powers: Energize the Left, Sway the Middle, and Suppress the Right. They have lost #3 and #2 looks to be on shaky ground. They have no one but themselves to blame for their loss of credibility. They could not be more transparently unhinged and openly hostile to anyone who doesn’t join what has clearly become a crusade to drive Trump from office were they to try. And yet they can’t drive the guy’s poll numbers out of the low/mid 40s.
All I would like is honest reporting. His Hairness steps in it enough that the media shouldn’t need to make up material. Unfortunately, the media’s unwillingness to pay even lip service to being a neutral arbiter has given me cause to dismiss items that may well be of significance. This is not good for the country. The media cannot keep the powerful honest by being patently dishonest themselves.
