Archaeologists in Spain discover cache of prehistoric crystal weapons

Archaeologists in Spain have unearthed a trove of 5,000 year old crystal weapons from a tomb complex. Knowing what I do about lithics, I am gobsmacked by this assemblage.

From Disclose TV :

An excavation of the megalithic tombs of the site at Valencina de la Concepcion in south-western Spain has uncovered a ‘remarkable set’ of crystal weapons. The weapons uncovered are described as exquisitely made and wonderfully well preserved. It is estimated that they date back to the around 3000 BC. It has been noted that the weapons are roughly the same shape as the flint arrowheads that were in common proliferation in the area during this era, but the crystal items would have required a much greater level of skill to construct.

There are no crystal mines in the nearby proximity which suggests that the creators of these objects must have traveled many hundreds of kilometers to source their material. The scarcity of crystal rock in addition to the enormous amount of craftsman the construction of the artifacts involved suggests that these were elite products. Given that the crystal weapons in a tomb, it suggests that they were used as highly sought after funerary items.

The predictable concoidal (semi-circular) fracture patterns you get from flint, chert, and obsidian make them fantastic materials to work. Crystals of this sort have a vastly different microscopic crystalline structure, and would behave completely differently when struck. I can’t image where you would even start to develop the proper technique.

Amazing craftsmanship.

    Primitive men had great skill.

    Woah. That is beautiful.

People forget that they didnt have iPhones internet and tv. No distractions in a sunup to sundown day. No weekends. No 3 day holidays. Life simply was simple. I always remember a study on Namibian natives. Their hearing was extraordinary. No diminishing with age. Reason. Profound quiet for all their lifetime. If I remember correctly finds of flint napping going back WAY more than 5K have millions of shards in piles. Imagine from early age of childhood for 20 or 30 years napping flint. Everyday. All day. It would become second nature. In 5 years you would be a master. Like eskimos have 50 words for snow because it is such an intimate part of their life. The ancient nappeer would FEEL the rock. Could SEE every edge before he got started.

I have enormous respect for our ancient ancestors.
