Checking in, and then back to testing the CRKT Hootenanny

I hope everyone is having a good evening. I don’t have a lot of time to write, I want to get back to my final tests on the CRKT Hootenanny. I have been testing this knife for a couple of months, including gutting a couple of trout last week. I have been out in the workshop tonight, slicing cardboard and newsprint and all I can say is the results are really impressive.

The 8Cr13MoV steel seems to hit a sweet spot with regards to hardness. The CRKT Website says it is between 58-60HCR. It is soft enough to be extremely easy to sharpen on a Spyderco Sharpmaker, yet hard enough to hold its edge very well.

The high hollow grind of the knife allows the Hoot to slice cleanly through corrugarted cardboard. There is significantly less friction than with a thicker blade. If you combine downward pressure with a drawing motion, the blade’s belly positively zips though the cardboard. While the performance was beginning to drop off slightly at the 150′ mark, the knife was still going strong at 200′ when I ran out of cardboard.

The Hootenanny’s performance on the cardboard test was among the best I have sampled.

    I’ll say it again…8Cr13MoV is GREAT steel.

    Love the fact that it is easy to get an edge and keep it. It is easier to sharpen than 440 and takes an edge like AUS-8. It is inexpensive and corrosion resistant.

    I know that everything has to do with the heat treatment, but Kershaw does it right and I am sure that crkt has got it licked as well.
