EDC for CCW: Lightsabers?

Yes, you read that right. Some smart dudes at Harvard and MIT were messing around with photons, because that’s apparently an everyday occurrence for them. They blasted them through a cloud of rubidium atoms and they started to clump together.

“When these photons interact with each other, they’re pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what’s happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies.” As in Star Wars.

Unfortunately they plan on using this technology for quantum computers. That doesn’t mean that someone else might not pick up this technology and make them real, although I can already hear the cries: “Why do you need a lightsaber?” “Ban lightsabers today!” “No lightsaber blades over 3 inches.” Read the whole article here:

  1. AW1Ed says:

I take the phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range, please. With the lightsaber bayonet.

    1. Duncan Idaho says:

The encapsulation of a terminated beam of plasma within an electromagnetic containment field would be pretty damn cool.

Hell, we already have homemade lasers from disk drives that can light matches and cut electrical tape.

    2. jwm says:

If this stuff reaches the production stages the progressives will have to forget about banning guns and knives and devote all their time to trying to ban death rays. Kewl.

  2. Joe says:

Shoot, this is old news – I saw this technology from the movie Real Genius back in the early eighties. That’s probably where today’s college geeks got their inspiration.
