Forged in Freezer: Making an ice-knife

Instead of using dried fish or aluminum foil to craft a knife as he has done in the past, this time Japanese YouTuber Kiwami Japan has turned to his freezer for inspiration – literally. In his newest video he crafts a rudimentary chef’s knife out of ice.

Not just any old ice mind you, for this build he is using a scrim of polyester batting to give the knife some strength beyond the fragility of ice itself. Essentially he is making Pykrete.

For those unfamiliar with Pykrete, it was an interesting idea. By mixing sawdust and ice, they created a durable material that the even considered making an “unsinkable” aircraft carrier out it in WWII.
