Israeli journalist stabbed demonstrating stab-resistant vest. (Updated with Video)

An Israeli reporter was injured when demonstrating a stab-resistant vest.

Chalk this one up to a Darwin Award narrowly averted. In the rough knife equivalent to the gun safety adage, “Don’t point a knife towards anything you don’t intend to cut”. An Israeli TV reporter was doing a piece on knife-resistant vests and how they can protect civilians and soldiers alike from the Islamist perpetrators of the Knife Intifada.

From Jerusalem Post:

(F)or journalists who are field reporters, the profession also carries a lot of risks as Eitam Lachover, the education reporter for the Israel broadcasting Authority’s Channel 1 discovered when he went to cover a story outside his regular beat.

Lachover went out on Wednesday morning to do a news story on bullet-proof and knife-proof safety vests used by both civilians and the defense establishment

In the course of interviewing people for the segment, he met with representatives of the company that manufactures the vests and was persuaded to be a guinea pig and agree to be stabbed while wearing the safety vest.

In that way, his report could become a first person story, he reasoned.

It did indeed become a first person story, but not in the way he anticipated.

After donning the vest in front of the camera, Lachover was stabbed, and the knife penetrated the vest, injuring him lightly.

Highly embarrassed, the company representatives rendered immediate medical treatment before transferring Lachover for medical treatment at a hospital, where a surgeon stitched up the wound.

Truthfully, if not for the vest, Lachover might have been killed by the strike. But it is still a reminder that no armor is without its limits.

Update: I wasn’t able to find a video last night, but this just went up on YouTube:

I am not sure how that vest would fare against a thrust with some body weight transfer behind it, but I suppose it is better than nothing.

Just like “water resistant.” You don’t really know what that means.

And all it takes is an old school stiletto (as in a super sharp spike) and you are basically toast no matter what you are wearing.

Still. I’d rather have one that not if someone is trying to kill me.

    Rondel dagger ftw.

looks like a old bayonet IMO. Still those are an evolution of the classic rondel dagger at the very least. 600 years later that is still the best general shape to stab holes in things.

  3. dph says:

But what if a knife wielding jihadist is using something like this.

    1. If you can protect your neck, I think that the vest would fare better against a machete slash than an effective stiletto thrust.

      1. dph says:

I’ve only used my halfachance on small saplings and brush so far but I’m thinking if wielded with any authority at all it would probably take off an arm or split your head wide open. I’d hate to be on the receiving end regardless whether it’s a machete, stiletto, or any other edged implement.
