Jacksonville, FL Sword Didn’t Beat Gun. Not This Time.

An argument between acquaintances turned deadly in Jacksonville, Florida last week when a man with a sword attacked another man, who was armed with a gun. Unlike most ‘stupid people doing stupid things’ incidents, this one occurred in broad daylight in a residential neighborhood.

From Jacksonville.com:

Police say one man is dead and another in custody in what may be a self-defense case Friday on Jacksonville’s Westside.

The men knew each other and had gotten into an argument. One had a gun and one a type of sword or long knife, Chief Annie Smith of the Sheriff’s Office.

Police were called shortly before 1 p.m. to the 8600 block of Buttercup Street after the fight spilled into the driveway. The man with the sword was shot and killed, Smith said.

The other man fled and was later picked up by police. He and witnesses were being questioned Friday afternoon.

Smith said because both men were armed, investigators are trying to determine if the shooting was in self-defense.

Maybe the dead guy tried to charge the gun, which doesn’t always work like it did for Jimmy Hoffa. Either way, these kinds of things never go the way Highlander fans think they should.

I love a quality edged weapon. But a gun beats them in most cases. There’s more than one reason swords have been relegated to ceremonial use in the military.

Did you read about the Gurkha who killed a few Taliban with the tripod of his GPMG? Before that, he’d been using a sandbag… They can make just about anything into a lethal weapon.

A drawn gun beats a sword in the hand.

Unless the sword carrier is withing 3 yards. That could be a draw.

You want to make sure to be further away, safety off, finger on trigger, full magazine.

In the duck and cover days we called that MAD. Kept the russians and us from creating mad max world for real.
