Japan’s NHK Documentary: In Love with the Samurai Sword

Japanese Sword Polishing

I was actually looking at a different video when I stumbled across this one and was sucked in from the start. It is a documentary from Japan’s NHK Public broadcasting network. One might think a video of Japanese sword polishing might be a bit dry. Other than the occasional “dead air” where the audio track cuts out, including the first 25 seconds or so – so jump forward, the video is fascinating. It follows a Japanese Master Togishi or sword polisher, and his two apprentices throughout the process of polishing several swords, but even more fascinating was watching the interplay between the three. One apprentice is a gifted polisher on his way to being Master himself. The other is a bit of a screw-up and his Master lets him have it on multiple occasions.

It is a great Sunday watch, so kick back and enjoy.

  1. What a great video! You’re right, once you start watching this video you have to watch it all. It gives you a better understanding of the lifestyle and dedication. It’s not a how-to, it’s a why-do-you. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

    1. Thanks for describing the “feel” better than I did and thanks for stopping by.
