Just Arrived For Testing: SOG Seal Pup

Just in time to ride the coat-tails of yesterday’s Rorke Denver story, this SOG Seal Pup arrived at TTAK’s state-of-the-art publishing/testing facilities (okay, my house) for testing.

For a street price of about $65, the Seal pup brings a Taiwanese-made 4.75″ blade of partially serrated AUS-8 stainless, glass-filled nylon grips and a Molle-compatible Kydex-lined Nylon holster. It arrived with a faint mist of oil on the blade and with an edge that’s hair-popping sharp.

A bargain to be sure, but an Immortal Blade Of Manliness? I’ll beat the crap out of it and let you know.

It’s a good looking knife and could be an EDC self-defense knife for those of us not into folders.

    According to wiki:
“AUS-8 (8A) is comparable to 440B with a carbon content close to 0.75%.[7] AUS-8 is often used instead of 440C.[7] SOG knives uses AUS-8 extensively.”

I’m no metallurgist or knife maker, and SOG has a good reputation. However, the AUS-8 (440B) type of metal does concern me if the knife is to be frequently used and relied upon in ongoing critical use situations.

    1. Mark Davis says:

I like AUS-8. I haven’t used SOG’s version of it, but I’ve been very happy with it in older Cold Steel knives from Seki, Japan. In my experience it gets very sharp, keeps an edge pretty well, and is easy to sharpen. I look forward to Chris’s review.

    2. D says:

from the SOG website: “AUS-8 and AUS-6 are high-grade chromium Japanese steels that boast a good balance of toughness and strength, edge holding ability, corrosion resistance, and cost. Typical Rockwell hardness is 56-58.” I’m not worried about any possible shortcomings of the steel, though, because I managed to find a version with one of their best heat treatments and a Ti-Ni coating. Unfortunately, this means I won’t have a non-stick knife 🙂

  2. Dann says:

i like mine. though i did take off the partial serrations, which i like a lot better now.
