Knife Attack in Brooklyn Synagogue

About 1:45am this morning, Calvin Peters stormed into the Chabad-Lubavitch synagogue in Brooklyn, NY. He attacked rabbinical student Levi Rosenblatt, shouting “I want to kill the Jew”, before stabbing him in the head. Rosenblatt is in stable condition and is expected to recover. Peters is not expected to recover after being shot in the abdomen (video above); he died a few hours later at a local hospital.

From the NY Daily News:

“A 25-year-old Israeli at the synagogue, who wished not to be named, said he saw Peters enter and leave the building an hour before the attack.

“He was looking around, he asked for a book,” the witness said. “He looked not so much crazy, but different.”

When the man returned, he was armed with a knife in his hand and anger in his voice.

“I will kill the Jew! I want to kill the Jew!” the witness heard the attacker yelling as he entered the 24-hour religious center.

“I never thought it would happen in New York,” he told The News. “These things don’t need to happen.”

Peters lashed out at Rosenblatt in an apparently unprovoked attack, leaving the young man bleeding on the ground, begging for help.

“I went over to the floor, I saw the teenager on the floor, his hair was blood. He was saying ‘Save me,’ ” the witness said.

Rosenblatt’s blood-soaked yarmulke was still lying on the ground as cops continued their investigation Tuesday morning.”

Obviously the perp was espousing anti-Semitic views, but there is no sign that this is the Knife Intifada reaching America. This seems to be a one-off of a deranged individual, at least at first glance. Time will tell as the investigation unfolds.

The cell phone video seems pretty straightforward. I do not know why the officer did not try to secure the knife (toss it away maybe?) before reaching for his handcuffs. That being said, the perp had plenty of warning to comply with commands and did not. It seemed like the situation was deteriorating quickly before the shot rang out. Barring further information, this appears to be a fairly justifiable shooting. Mr. Peters is not likely to be Rev. Al’s next poster child.

It surprises me. How often do cops shoot someone unarmed after even less than a two second look? Yet whenever we see a video of a cop confronted with an armed and determined attacker, they seem to hesitate and draw it out.
