Knife Madness USA- Modern division tips-off: Microtech vs. TOPS

Facebook Readers: Click “Like” to vote for Microtech, click “Love” to vote for TOPS.

Howdy folks and welcome back to TTAK’s 2017 Knife Madness Tournament. Having wrapped up the Import- East division, we now return to American shores for the first of the USA- Modern division Round 1 matchups. Today’s matchup features #1 seed Microtech against #8 TOPS Knives. Of course the seedings are completely random within each division, so this should likely be closer to an even match I imagine.

Just a reminder before we start: You can vote twice each day. Once in the comment section, and once at this Facebook link.

I don’t own, nor have I tested any Microtech knives. I have spent some time with my buddy’s OFT automatic, which is what one typically thinks of when they picture a Microtech knife. In fact, if I were to carry an OTF auto, I almost certainly would chose a Microtech. However, as a general rule I am not a fan of the style. I find them boxy, and many (though Microtech does better than most) just don’t feel as robust as a comparable folder. Of course they do make other styles of knife as well. All in the USA.

TOPS Knives:

Even though I haven’t actually tested a TOPS knife myself yet, I am a big fan of the company. Among many reasons is that they are headquartered in my old stomping ground of Idaho Falls, ID. I lived outside I.F. from 2002-2006, and am headed out there in June to do some fishing on the Snake and Madison rivers. I am in the process of finalizing details for a visit to their production facility while I am there. I am excited to see it and share it with you.

In late 1998, TOPS Knives was founded with a mission to create the highest-quality knives around. Our Knives are tools, designed and built using the extensive knowledge and real life experiences of many Operators with backgrounds in Military, Law Enforcement, outdoor professions, and Martial Arts. Specifically, we have worked with designers with backgrounds ranging from Navy Seals to Airborne Rangers, from Martial Arts instructors to survival experts, and from SWAT Team Members to Native American weapons experts. We have a designer from nearly every background that uses hard-core knives. Perhaps the best part, all TOPS fixed blades are manufactured and hand-finished at our facility in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, USA.

Our Knives have been requested and deployed in “Hot Spots” all over the world. Numerous individuals who are or were Field Operators use or have used our knives and report top performance and reliability from times when their life depended on the tools they had with them.

Ok, so that doesn’t tell the whole story. When David and I visited the TOPS booth at BLADE, we had the chance to talk with Leo Espinoza, President of TOPS and their lead designer. If I understood the story correctly, Leo had been walking by the newly founded TOPS knives shop on his way home for school for a number of weeks when he finally went in and asked for a job. The only thing they had was a “shop-monkey” position sweeping floors and cleaning the restroom. Leo took the job, and climbed the ladder in what truly is an American success-story, to reach his current position. I am hoping that I can get Leo to tell his story in a 5 from the Grinder piece, and if not I will certainly try to fill in more of the details when I get the chance to visit in person.

  1. Cubbie says:

No experience with either, but I like the look and ruggedness of the Tops Knives so they’ve got my vote. Doesn’t hurt that they’re in the Great NW.

  2. stuartb says:

Tops, great branding, have yet to get one though (so many knives, so little cash)

  4. Sam L. says:

Again, no experience with either, but I do like the dimple in the handle for holding a fire drill shaft.
    So, TOPS.

  6. Chase M says:

I have one of the most seemingly impractical knives from Microtech, an Ultratech with a double edged blade, that has been my edc since I bought it last year. This out the front auto is very well made, has great steel, and actually works as an edc. I have to give it to Microtech on this one.
