Know Your Knives: Corn Knife

Image courtesy Tractor SupplyImage courtesy Tractor SupplyIt looks like a prop from a horror movie (which it certainly has been) but this knife has a more pacific purpose than disemboweling sinful teenagers at abandoned summer camps. In fact, it closely resembles one of the oldest tools in human history, the sickle knife.

As the name suggests, the corn knife is made for pruning and harvesting corn by hand. 99.9999% of all corn is harvested by gigantic combines, but if you’ve got enough corn in your garden it might make a dedicated knife worthwhile. The blade is 8″ long and 6″ wide, including the hook.

And who knows? If you’re on the paranoid side of things and if your SHTF plan involves postindustrial corn or wheat cultivation (or zombie dismemberment) an overbuilt steel sickle might come in handy.

At less than $15, it won’t break the bank.

I’ve never seen this knife but like the looks. What kind is it? A google search didn’t show anything like it. Thanks,

I live in an urban sprawl, the bay area, and I have axes, hatchets, machetes and knives of many descriptions. Non electric, non gasoline powered hand tools should be in everyones garage.

Do I feel the need to run out and buy a corn knife? No. But I’m certainly not going to try to talk anyone out of doing that if they wish.

  3. indian says:

wouldn’t you be allright with a razor sharp Mora?

  4. Bob says:

Spent many hours swinging one of these working on small farms/homesteads. After a few years I attached it to a old shovel handle and it makes a great brush removal tool.

I’d really like to be a part of online community where I can get feedback from other knowledgeable people that share the same interest.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!.
