Video: Building a tile-roofed hut with only primitive tools

The mad genius behind Primitive Technology blog and YouTube Channel is at it again. When I say he builds from scratch, I mean he starts with nothing, crafts his own stone tools, ceramic pots for carrying water, and more, then proceeds to get to work. The video above is the one that first caught my attention a few months back. In it you will see him create the tools and build a bark-thatched roof hut.

The video below the jump is his latest, and he takes it up several more notches. In this video, he builds another hut, this one complete with central heating and a homemade tile roof.

On his blog, he describes the project thusly:

“I built a hut with a tiled roof, underfloor heating and mud and stone walls. This has been my most ambitious primitive project yet and was motivated by the scarcity of permanent roofing materials in this location. Here, palm thatch decays quickly due to the humidity and insects. Having some experience in making pottery I wondered if roof tiles could feasibly be made to get around these problems. Another advantage of a tiled is that it is fire proof. A wood fired, underfloor heating system was installed for cold weather. A substantial wall of mud and stone were built under the finished roof. It should be obvious that this is not a survival shelter but a project used to develop primitive technological skills.”

With a 100+ day timeline, this isn’t an overnight survival shelter. However, there is no need to question this guys bushcraft bona fides. There is living, and there is living in style.

My wife sent that to me a couple days ago. SO cool. What a hard worker.

Been subbed to the guy since he built the thatched-roof hut. I love his videos, he’s got some amazing skills. I’d love to know more about his home-made pottery, how to find the clay, shape it, etc. Also, his manufacturing of stone tools is pretty awesome.
