If you see a knife with a brush in the handle, chances are good that it’s not an combination razor/shaving brush: it’s a mushroom knife. These three Mora mushroom knives are a bit goofy-looking, but they’re probably extremely useful for the devoted mushroom hunter.
Which I definitely am not. I love to eat fungal fruiting bodies, but I only eat the ones from the grocery store. Most commonly-found wild mushrooms are among the most poisonous things you’ll find in nature, spurring mycologists to joke that you can eat any mushroom once.
Safe mushroom-hunting can require great skill in distinguishing edible from toxic fungi. Every few years in the Pacific Northwest, a handful of mushroom hunters eat the wrong ‘shroom and get gravely ill. Some of them die, and some of them survive and need a liver transplant.
Not me: I can hardly tell a Rhododendron from a Ficus, and I’d be angling for a Darwin Award if I ate any mushroom I didn’t buy from Safeway.
But I digress. This is a slightly less-Ikea, more-traditional mushroom knife from Opinel, with a more traditional hawkbill blade. And what are the brushes for, you might ask? For cleaning the dirt off the mushroom before you decide to pick it.
The Mora mushroom knives are about $35 from various eBay vendors, which is surprisingly expensive for anything from Mora. The Opinel is also strangely pricey, at $25 to $35 each from Opinel.
