NYC Mayor DerpBlasio has called off the random shakedowns of his citizens via “stop and frisk”, and I do not have a particular problem with with this. Stop and frisk has led to the hyper-prosecution of knife carriers, to the tune of more than 60,000 prosecutions over a decade. The potential good is outweighed by the potential for 4th amendment issues, racial profiling, and other problems that create distrust between public servants and the citizenry served.
The bigger problem is he threw out “broken window policing” entirely. Public urination, vagrancy, parking, and other “quality of life” laws are not being enforced, and crime of all magnitudes is increasing across the board.
Slashings/stabbings are up about 20% on the year in NYC. Instead of allowing the law-abiding to tool up for their own defense, DerpBlasio has found a marginalized population he can shake down without the repercussions that come with stop and frisk. Enter NYC’s homeless population.
Since many of the knife attacks involve the homeless, those suffering metal disorders in particular, DerpBlasio’s answer is to disarm all homeless who enter the NYC shelter system. Never mind that they are going to find themselves out on the street the next morning, now disarmed against those who would prey on marginalized populations.
From NY Post:
“Cops are currently battling an 18 percent spike in year-to-date knife attacks, which sources have blamed on the hordes of mentally ill homeless people living on the streets or in city shelters.
“The lion’s share of random slashings are EDPs [emotionally disturbed persons] who are not getting the psychiatric help they need,” one NYPD source said.
Many of the seized cutting instruments — including the butcher knives and meat cleaver — clearly violate a city law that prohibits people from carrying “any knife which has a blade length of 4 inches or more.”
Shelter residents caught with illegal knives get handcuffed by safety officers employed by the Department of Homeless Services, then are transported to the local NYPD precinct for arrest and prosecution.
But the safety officers aren’t armed, and the shelters are so woefully understaffed that there can be as few as three officers per 100 to 150 residents, according to their union.
Teamsters Local 237 said the situation demands a change in protocol so the officers can carry handguns, Tasers, pepper spray and other defensive weapons.
Better New York should try to separate those showing violent and disturbed behavior and attempt to get them help. Instead of trying to rid yourselves of trans-fat and salt, how about spending money to boost mental health care?
Those people who are not threatening others should not lose their right to arms for self-defense just for seeking shelter. Indeed, NYC doesn’t even want their staff to be able to protect themselves let alone the great unwashed.
But DerpBlasio is doubling down on stupid, claiming that the increase in knife crime is proof that tough-on-gun policies are working:
“I’m not a criminologist but I can safely say that guns are being taken off the street in an unprecedented way. Some people, unfortunately, are turning to a different weapon,” –Mayor Bill DiBlasio
When you are done with the pointy things, are you going to round up the rocks in Central Park? How about loose bricks and other masonry? What about preventing people from being pushed onto subway tracks?
