Car attacks in Spain, a knife attack in Finland…

The perp in the Finland attack…

…and this following a week where the news was dominated with the fallout from a vehicular attack in Charlottesville, Virginia.

By now you have probably heard about the pair of vehicular attacks in Spain yesterday, which killed 14 people and injured more than 130. These attacks were carried out by an ISIS-claimed cell who may well have been planning a string of bombings as well. It seems a premature detonation led them to choose a different tool, the vehicles, to kill and maim.

From Guardian UK:

The terrorist cell which killed 14 people in Catalonia on Thursday was planning to mount a bombing attack in Barcelona that was only abandoned when they accidentally blew up the house where they were stockpiling explosives.

Thirteen people were killed and more than 130 injured after a white Fiat van ploughed along Las Ramblas in the Catalan capital on Thursday. Eight hours later, a Spanish woman was killed and six people were hurt after a car thought to be carrying five members of the same cell ran down pedestrians in the coastal town of Cambrils. All five terrorists were shot dead by police.

Reports on Friday afternoon suggested that the driver of the van used in the Las Ramblas attack, who had been hunted by police, was among those killed in Cambrils, but police later suggested he may still be on the run.

Despite the carnage and chaos wrought, Catalan police said the cell had apparently been preparing a far bigger attack in Barcelona.

Josep Lluís Trapero, a major with the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police, said that the gang had been gathering butane gas canisters at a house in the small town of Alcanar, 120 miles south of Barcelona. However something went wrong and the building exploded on Wednesday night, killing two people and wounding 16.

Then today there was a spree stabbing in Finland which killed 2 people.

From UK Sun:

People were left covered in blood after the shocking mid-afternoon attack which saw eight people rushed to hospital.

Cops warned people to stay away from the city and reinforced security nationwide, with increased patrols and more surveillance, in case more people were involved.

“At this stage, there is only one suspect and we are investigating whether there are more people involved … but it looks likely (he was alone),” said Markus Laine from the National Bureau of Investigation.

“At this stage, we do not investigate this (as a terrorism attack) but the possibility has not been ruled out,” he told a news conference.

Horrified bystanders reported hearing screaming as a number of people were stabbed in Market Square before one person was arrested by Finnish police.

Interior Minister Paula Risikko said: “We have not been able to confirm the person’s identity… we have been in contact with the immigration service as the person looks like a foreigner.”

Whether it is motivated racist hatred or a twisted religious ideology, or even a nihilistic loner with a grudge against the world, no number of laws or prohibitions on tools can stop to a mind set on evil and mayhem.
