In a story that is as tragic as it is laudatory, a 16 year old California girl came to the rescue of her mother, who was being assaulted by her abusive father. The two had taken refuge from 39 year old Fernando Gomez in a friend’s apartment, but Gomez found them and began to beat his wife.
In an effort to protect her mother, a 16-year-old girl stabbed her father with a kitchen knife Friday after he became violent, officials said.
Fernando Gomez, 39, of Adelanto, was airlifted to a hospital to be treated for his stab wounds after the altercation in which San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies say began when Gomez tracked down and confronted his wife at a friend’s residence at approximately 8 a.m.
Gomez’s wife and children had taken shelter at a friend’s apartment complex after Gomez allegedly assaulted her. After finding her, deputies said that Gomez “immediately became violent, assaulting his wife and the female friend who was attempting to assist her,” according to a sheriff’s news release.
The release further states that Gomez knocked both women to the ground and then began assaulting his wife.
In order to stop the beating, Gomez’s 16-year-old daughter grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him once in the back, officials said.
The girl will not be charged with a crime, which should go without stating but you never know, and her father is expected to face domestic violence charges when he recovers from his wound.
There is no way to determine the number of kitchen knives that have stopped assaults, without making news. I would wager it greatly exceeds the number of times a criminal stabbing takes place. Just a bit of food for thought.
