An 11 year old honor student at the Silver Trail Middle School in Pembroke Pines, Fla is in hot water for using the knife from a toddler’s silverware set to cut a peach to share with a friend. For this act of kindness she is facing possible criminal charges in addition to a 6 day (reduced to 3) suspension. Needless to say her parents are livid.
From NY Daily News:
The distraught family explained the knife is part of a spoon and fork set their daughter has been using since she was a baby.
But the child’s act of kindness got her suspended, and now, her parents fear she could be criminally charged.
“She’s afraid now of the educators. She’s afraid of people at school. They need to change the system,” her father said.
A Broward County school district spokesman told the station the “school followed district policy regarding this incident and continues to work with the student and parents involved.”
Larry Meltzer, the family’s attorney, said the school handled the “tragic” situation poorly.
“The school board has abused its discretion to act in this case,” Meltzer said, according to WPLG-TV. “She (the student) should be applauded for her generosity, kindness and for her motivation to be a great student in all senses of that word.”
It is unclear whether the Souto family plans to file charges against the school.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department said the district attorney’s office took over the investigation, the station reported.
I am at a loss for words. Add this unfortunate incident to the litany of hoplophobic dingbattery that plagues our nation’s schools. At least she wasn’t violently handcuffed and frogmarched out. School officials should face child abuse charges for traumatizing the poor girl.
My kids had a similar set of silverware when they were toddlers. I never worried about them ruining anything, let alone their future, while using them. Sad that an 11 year old might just have that happen.
