This knife popped across my Instagram feed yesterday, posted by GP Knives. I was immediately intrigued by the design and useful-looking blade shape. So I went to their website to check out the price and specs. Then I said nope.

I think this knife has a lot of potential, but is lacking in one major area for me to buy it at $75. Let’s start with the good. First of all, it is damn elegant. This is definitely a gentleman’s folder, with a blade right at 3″. The milled lines on the stainless steel handles flow well with the overall design. The Outburst assisted opening mechanism is one I’d like to get my hands on, even though I’ve begun to turn away from assisted opening. The tip-down only clip is off-putting but not a deal-breaker. Overall it seems like a solid design, but…

The steel sucks. If I’m paying $75 for a knife I don’t want 1.4116 (a variation of 4116 Krupp, which is similar to 420HC). While I understand that the elegant mill work on the handles costs a lot (eats up bits and machinery), it is blade steel that ultimately makes or breaks a knife, and this steel just can’t cut it at this price point (lame pun intended). It’s stated Rockwell hardness is 55-57; 57 isn’t even what I like the lower estimate to be. I believe that a simple upgrade to 8Cr13MoV or Sandvik 12C27 would make this knife worth it without adding more than a couple bucks extra to the cost.

Keep in mind this griping about price is coming from a guy who has spent over $700 on one knife. Twice.

That’s a great analysis and I know I would have glossed over the steel selection issue. Does anyone have a recommended web reference on common blade materials that describes their pros and cons?

    1. Nathan says:

Elliot at Ferrum Forge has a lot of information though his Youtube channel, but he doesn’t get into the cheaper steels. He typically addresses 154CM and up and various heat treats

    2. Roger says:

There’s an app for that. And the same material is also available online.

Thanks guys I appreciate the info!

Want. Badly, badly want. But the blade steel isn’t great. Still, very much want.

A big YES, the quality of the steel is everything & definitely a deal breaker on a load of otherwise very well made knives I see on offer. Does decent steel really add that much to the price ? – I think not.

  4. Nick says:

The CRKT website cites the steel as AUS8..?

  5. Nick says:

My bad. Mixed it up with the Argus.
