Tonight’s post is kind of a hot mess. I started pulling some links together more than a week ago, and got distracted by other topics. I need to clear the decks so I can start from scratch, which leads me to a question for our readers. What is the minimum number of items would you like to see in a News Digest post? I never feel like I have invested enough in these, yet they take longer than a typical post. I would love to do these more often. Is 6-7 items about right? More? Less? Thanks for your input.

SO away we go…

HE WAS A KNOWN WOLF, MAYBE NOT A LONE ONE:  French investigators quiz friend of Paris knife attacker

French prosecutors on Monday detained a friend of Paris knife attacker Khamzat Azimov for another 24 hours, as investigators moved him to the domestic intelligence headquarters for questioning over the stabbing spree claimed by the Islamic State group.

A source close to the investigation said the friend, like Azimov a 20-year-old of Chechen origin from Strasbourg, had been transferred from the eastern city to the offices of the DGSI intelligence agency under high security.

Azimov, a naturalised French citizen, was shot dead by police on Saturday night after stabbing a 29-year-old man to death in the busy Opera district of central Paris and wounding four others.

I’M SURE THE SCHOOL FROWNS ON KNIFE USE AS WELL: Penn State’s 98-Year-Old Outing Club Is No Longer Allowed to Go Outside

The student “Outing Club,” which has gone backpacking, kayaking, and hiking in state parks over the course of its 98-year-existence, will no longer be allowed to host outdoor events after administrators conducted a risk assessment, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“The types of activities in which [Penn State Outing Club] engages are above the university’s threshold of acceptable risk for recognized student organizations,” according to an official announcement.

“Student safety in any activity is our primary focus,” Lisa Powers, a Penn State spokeswoman, told The Post-Gazette.

To be fair to Millennials…they have been taught poorly by their parents.

JEREMY CLARKE, NOT CLARKSON : A story about buying a throwing knife for a 8 year old in the UK.

In awed silence Oscar and I browsed the cased ranks of elegant flick-knives and stilettos. The price tags, unfortunately, put them well out of our range. Further along were the more business-like saw-toothed hunting daggers, also out of reach. But we wanted  a knife badly we realised. One we could throw. As a contribution, Oscar searched his pocket and proffered a tightly folded €10 note. I looked in my wallet, matched it, added ten more and went to the counter.

In honesty, I am not really sure what the point of the story was, but I am left amused that it was in a UK paper and was not implicitly anti-knife.

LA-LA LAND: Homeless man who stabbed a restaurant patron had been deemed “not a threat” by cops that very afternoon.

Police confirmed that a bystander reported a man — who turned out to be Jackson — for disruptive behavior several hours before the stabbing.

According to the bystander, a man was yelling on the promenade not far from the beachside restaurant about three hours before the attack.

Patrol officers were out on other calls so command center staff monitored the man via a pier security camera system for more than 20 minutes before deciding he didn’t seem to be a threat, police said.

Police are asking anyone who spoke with Jackson during that time to contact investigators.

The killing prompted the Ventura City Council to increase police patrols in the area and add staff members to monitor security cameras, among other measures.

Day late, and since it is California – Billions of dollars short.

Troopers say Andrews pounded on the door, threatened to kill the principal and tried to get inside through windows and another door.

Troopers say he stabbed both in the torso but one person wrestled away the knife.

Two other residents restrained Andrews until troopers arrived. The injured residents were flown to a hospital.

Andrews is charged with felony assault.

Nice post, and great Sprave video. Maybe TTAK needs to get him to build a rig for your reviews?

  2. Matt in FL says:

Back when I was doing the Daily Digest at TTAG, I usually aimed for about 5 items, unless one was particularly long or detailed. Much more than that and it seemed I reached the limits of people’s attention spans.

  3. Sam L. says:

Five is a good number. I check Knifenews and Knife-Depot’s Cutting Edge daily.
That first one on Types Of Knives was a HOOT!! Sprave’s a nut, but what a sense of humor! I really enjoyed the 5 Worst Movie Swords.

  4. cmeat says:

it’s a fun format. either side of five is fine.
liability prevents the outing club from having fun, which is no longer allowed. here’s hoping they’ll explore surreptitiously. the coolidge comment is brilliant. the details are almost onion worthy.

  5. Brian says:

Did Penn State determine that the Outing club was too dangerous or did they decide that they would rather have students pay to go on Penn State’s Outdoor Adventure trips?
