TOPS releases Grandpa’s Ax

I was bummed that Leo Espinoza was not at TOPS the day that I dropped in to visit. Leo is President and lead designer for TOPS, and I have had the pleasure of spending a little time with him at each of the last two BLADE Shows. He is an interesting man with an interesting story.

The new TOPS “Grandpa’s Ax” has a great story as well. It sprung out of an in-house design competition, which just so happens to have been won by Leo’s father.

From Tops Knives:

Grandpa’s ax is an excellent mix of size, weight, and chopping capability for a small hatchet. Weighing just under 1.5lbs, this is a tool that can be easily carried long distances, making it an excellent tool for backpackers and minimalist campers. The design came about as a part of a challenge given to TOPS employees in 2016 to see which employee could design the best tomahawk/hatchet/ax. The winning design came from Leo Espinoza’s (TOPS President) father Lorenzo Espinoza Sr. Leo is the main designer for TOPS and approves all outside designers that TOPS chooses to work with. You know what they say: like father, like son.

Pick yours up today from an authorized TOPS Knives Dealer or direct from TOPS.

Lorenzo Espinoza Sr.

Apparently Leo approves of his Dad as an “outside designer”. I would hate to see Sunday dinner if not. Mom might not be too pleased.

I would love to test this head to head against the Hogue EX-T01 Tomahawk that I have been evaluating.

    Another great one from TOPS!

  2. Cubbie says:

Only $160 on TOPS site right now!

Curious if the cutouts are for hammer and/or spike attachments to be released later.

    1. Arctodus says:

The cutouts •-• are somewhat of a trademark of Mike Fuller, founder of TOPS Knives. It represents the letter R in Morse code, meaning ‘roger’, or ‘all is well’.

  3. Arctodus says:

Leo Espinosa is one of the finest gentlemen you will ever meet.
