TTAK’s TOP 10 of 2017

TTAK's Top 10 of 2017

I saw that the folks at The Truth About Guns have been running a countdown of  2017’s Top 10 posts, and while I don’t have the free writing time to run multiple posts on the subject, I figured that a review of TTAK’s Top 10 of 2017 might be a fun exercise.

The Mothership is running their Top 10 in terms of 2017 page views, irrespective of the date of publication. I will do it that way, and also break down the Top 10 posts published in 2017 as well.

The Truth About Knives is incredibly archive-driven. 90% or so of our daily page views come from organic internet searches for the topics we have covered. (If you want to follow our Facebook page, Twitter, or Instagram, the boost to our referral traffic would be most appreciated).

Here are the

Clarifying Boy Scout knife policy… More stats 14,628
Ask A Knifemaker: The Truth About Rust More stats 13,925

As you can see, only 2 posts from 2017 even made the Top 10: Clarifying Boy Scout Knife Policy, and the reader submitted My Son’s “illegal knife” legal nightmare.

2017’s most viewed post, Ask a Knifemaker: The Truth About Damascus Steel has been a beast, representing more than 300k of TTAK’s nearly 6.5 million page views all time.

Chris Dumm’s Review of the Opinel No. 8 is our all time most read knife review, knocking my review of the Mora Bushcraft Black off that lofty perch.

It would have been nice to have a post about the Knives of Alone Season 4, but as David explained, there was no “gear preview” to base a post on. The Knives of Alone Season 3 still performed nicely though.

David’s 2015 review of the Ken Onion Work Sharp made 2017’s Top 10…

And the remainder of the positions were filled out by more of Will Woods’ Ask a Knifemaker series, and a Chris Dumm Know Your Knife Laws post from Ohio –where the knife laws suck.

If we want to limit the list to posts published in 2017, the first 2 spots go to “Illegal Knife” Nightmare and the Boy Scout knife policy post. The others are in descending order from number 3 (10,639 views):

#4 (8554 views): David West cracked the top 10 this year earning his first Instalanche in the process:

#5 (7959 views): One of my favorite posts of the year…

#6 (7,833 views) was a post shared by TTAG Managing Editor Dan Zimmerman:

#7 (7,614 views) is a history post, which also benefited from an Instalanche:

#8 (7,238 views): Knifemaker Todd Hunt contributed several posts this year. His perspective is both appreciated and valued. He is a great addition to the team:

#9 (6,405 views) was a Defensive Tomahawk Use:

And rounding out the Top 10 posts which debuted in 2017 is the guest post from Dan Sullivan of on prepping to survive in an urban environment. For an unsolicited submission, it sure kicked some but with 5800 page views.
